One of the best parts of the holiday season is enjoying and creating family traditions. For us, visiting the Lake Mohawk Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market) in Sparta is a new favorite holiday tradition. The Lake Mohawk Christmas Market takes place this weekend, December 2 from 10am-9pm and December 3 from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
On a whim last year, my younger son and I took the 25 minute drive to Lake Mohawk to visit the Lake Mohawk Christmas Market. Not knowing what to expect, we were overwhelmed by the unique details of this market.
Lake Mohawk, itself, is a breathtaking backdrop, but the beautifully lit and tented market that lined the lake and its country club added to its mystique. With many German-influenced details, including music and German food, it felt like a visit to another culture for just an afternoon.
We enjoyed shopping and visiting all of the vendors, many of whom were crafters and artisans. From hand-painted signs to hand-knit gloves and scarves to beautifully carved wooden sculptures, the market had something for everyone.
Our favorites though, were the food treats throughout the market. The smell of toasted almonds and baked treats wafted through the brisk winter air when we visited.
We were introduced stroopwafels which are a Norwegian baked dough with a waffle-like texture and a caramel filling. Eating those sweet treats freshly baked were a definitive part of the whole Christmas Market experience!
Though we visited in the late afternoon and had a wonderful experience, it was still crowded. If you visit in the early afternoon, there are a number of live events and activities for kids, such as pony rides and a petting zoo. It was complicated to find parking, but their website offers plenty of suggestions. Be prepared for crowds and complicated parking; just be sure to check their website for tips to handle logistics. Since it is a market, many vendors take both cash and credit cards. There are, however, ATMS onsite if you need them.
One of my favorite Holiday memories is watching my then four year old dance so innocently to the live music under the glow of all the Christmas lights at the Lake Mohawk Christmas Market. In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s so important to make and create fun traditions. If you’re heading to the Lake Mohawk Christmas Market, make a family day of it: disconnect, slow down and indulge in the joy of the holiday season.
