Enjoying Local Holiday Traditions

With Christmas just a few short days away, I thought I’d round up a few of our favorite holiday traditions. Our area has so many festive events that make for great holiday family traditions, and here are just a few of ours:

Visiting Santaland

Perhaps my kids’ favorite local gem is Santaland, which is graciously maintained by Denville Rotary. This holiday hotspot in downtown Denville is conveniently adjacent to the Post Office, where volunteers facilitate children’s visits with Santa.

Aside from all the handpainted features and meticulous details throughout the outdoor space, one of the best parts of Denville’s Santaland is that the kids get a private meet and greet with Santa.

It’s never rushed, too loud or overly commercial. Santaland is truly a special part of our town, and one that I’m so glad is a part of my family’s traditions.

Local Holiday Lights

There’s always a running list of local houses that have big displays of lights. After dinner some nights, we like to bundle up in our pjs, grab the popcorn and drive around to check out the Christmas lights in the area.

Mountain Lakes has a few streets where almost every home participates. In our neighborhood, I saw that there is a home on Merrie Trail that has a fun display too. I’ll edit this list later to include some homes in the area with fun lights.

Denville Volunteer Fire Department Santa Visit

Another local holiday tradition is definitely when the Denville Volunteer Fire Department helps Santa visit all the kids on Christmas Eve prior to his big night. There’s nothing quite like seeing the joy on the kids’ faces when they see Santa on the firetruck and receive a special gift. As a reminder, this year’s schedule is as follows:

Local Eats and Treats

In between last minute shopping, sports, work and life, our family enjoys eating in town. We have such a robust downtown, and to help it thrive, that we believe in frequenting the businesses that give back to our community. Quite frankly, not having to cook, in the midst of the chaos of life, is a gift in itself. Good company, good conversation with my boys over a delicious meal and a Holiday craft beer at Thatcher’s is a fun night out for me.

My favorite holiday dessert can be found at none other than Denville Dairy. With bits of chocolate, chunks of cake, raspberry jam, mixed together in an almond ice cream, the Rainbow Holiday Cookie-flavored ice cream over at Denville Dairy tastes exactly like those beautiful rainbow cookies. This flavor is only around during the holidays, and it’s simply Christmas in a cone.

Whatever you do for the holidays, take time to unplug and enjoy the gift of the love around you.
